I debated for a while on whether I should write up this post. I mean, come on – every other Kdrama blogging site is doing one. Or, the ones I read do. I also admittedly have skimmed through a lot. Yes. Skim.
I have to say that 2010 was a big year for me in terms of dramas. I have never worked so closely with dramas before, and recapping is a pure joy. As I was compiling the list, I realized that I saw more dramas than I ever have in my entire life. Some were not to completion, and some were fleeting. But I included them in the list because I get to explain why I didn’t continue a certain drama. I also realized that I watched a LOT of SBS dramas. I also saw a lot of dramas that were not made or released in 2010, but more like catching up.
So here goes, a review of dramas I saw that came out in 2010 – the good, the meh, and the bad.
As if Taecyeon weren’t enough, Woo Young from 2PM and miss A’s Suzy will be joining the cast of Dream High as an overseas dancer and an aspiring singer respectively. Suzy is also the “prettiest girl” at school. Sigh* I don’t know how I feel about all these boy/girl idols going on to a drama. Just because they sing doesn’t mean they’re talented enough to act – especially since I feel that most girl/boy groups are “manufactured” nowadays, if you know what I mean. But miss A seems to be quite the hot band nowadays – I keep hearing about them.
Not to be outdone – U-Know Yunho is cast as Oh Yoon Jae, a special forces soldier for the National Maritime Police Academy in Poseidon, costarring Eric Mun. Tryin’ to prove he’s got more acting skills after his sad flop Heading to the Ground.
Aww – Kim Ji Hoon has gone off to the military! After finishing his run on Joseon X Files he is now “disappearing” for two years. Rumors have it that he’s dating his Joseon co-star Im Jung Eun, and because of them he told her to visit him – but with friends.
But on the good news-side, Jang Dong Gun and Go So Young are finally parents to a healthy baby boy. No word on the name, but the boy is gonna be getting massive media attention I bet.
It’s late, I know. But I have good reason: my two favorite American TV shows, House and Chuck have returned! And boy is it awesome! They’re definitely going to rival the upcoming Korean dramas for the rest of the year.
But on to the news. Two new casting announcements have been made. The big one is Kim Jae Wookjoining the dramaMary Stayed Out All Night. He will complete the love triangle with Jang Geun Suk and Moon Geun Young. Kim’s character is the perfect chaebol who was betrothed to Moon at a young age. But when she meets Jang, everything becomes more complicated. Woo! Giving him serious chaebol roles now after his turn in Bad Guy huh?
And Oh Ji Howill cameo in the first episode of Runaway Plan B. He plays Rain’s best friend who asks him to get started on the hunt for the secret treasure.
It’s September! New month – new start – and definitely new dramas!
For example, this week, Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Playful Kiss both premiered this week. I am itching to watch the first two episodes – probably this weekend – unless life gets in the way again.
But on to News Bits (which will be short)! Choi Seung Hyun (or T.O.P. – but I will refer to him by his real name when it comes to his acting chops in “Into the Fire”) is rumored to snag the Rookie Award at the 2010 Movie Awards. His performance was so strong that if he does win, he will be the first singer-from-an-idol-group-turned-actor to win one. And boy do I want him to win!
Hey Clint Eastwood! Hire Choi in your next movie!!!
With cameo appearances from Park Shin Hye and UEE to start, and news that Jang Geun Suk‘s schedule is freeing up for a new drama, rumors are hitting full force that the entire A.N.Jell band will cameo in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho! I want to refrain from saying it’s confirmed (even though some news sources are reporting it as so) because they still have to work out the schedules of all the band members, plus the news is making me so happy and giddy with glee that I would be crushed if it ended up not going through. It would be the BEST THING EVAAAA if it could happen. 😀
If it just ends up being Park Shin Hye and Jang Geun Suk – that would be cool too – as long as the two of them are together as a coupling and Tae Kyung gets jealous when Lee Seung Gi is affectionate towards Park, or if Go Mi Nam is jealous that Lee Seung Gi is overly affectionate with Shin Min Ah – because then:
Mi Nam: Hyung-nim! Why aren’t you like that with me!?
Tae Kyung: What are you talking about? You should be grateful I let you be my number one fan before anyone else!
Jung Il Woo and Uhm Tae Woong will both be holding fan meetings. Jung will have his in Seoul next month on his birthday, and then a Japanese fan meeting in November. Uhm will have his this weekend in Osaka, Japan. Don’t the two of them look so fine?!
It’s been rumored – or confirmed, depending on how much you want to believe the sources – that UEE and Park Shin Hye are going to cameo in My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. Both appeared previously in You’re Beautiful. The episodes that they’re going to appear in is supposed to be this week’s (tonight’s and tomorrow’s). Let’s wait and see!
Playful Kiss revealed posters AND a trailer for the drama. While the posters are so… sparkly? the trailer is immensely cute. It made me somewhat curious to watch the drama – whereas before, if I didn’t watch this drama I wouldn’t have cared less.
This drama is AWESOME! It’s too cute, too fun, too hilarious for words. I really enjoy this drama, and it’s because the Hong Sisters have managed to make it really fun and entertaining. It’s not overbearing on the emotional dramatic beats, which is one of the things I like about the Hong Sisters.
And the acting! Lee Seung Gi and Shin Min Ah are such winners! I’m SO GLAD that they went with Shin for the role of Gu Mi Ho. I was happy when it was first confirmed, and I’m beyond ecstatic now. The Hong Sisters really have a way in making their female leads cute and fresh, without being too much of a cliche or pathetic. It’s happened in you’re Beautiful, My Girl, Delightful Girl Choon Hyang, and Hong Gil Dong (in the little that I’ve seen of the last one).
