Bae Soo Bin and Lee So Yeon – Drama Power Couple

I have now seen way too many dramas with Bae Soo Bin and Lee So Yeon together. OK – maybe it’s just three, but these two have almost always appeared on screen as major characters with some love line or relationship.

It’s kind of weird, because they consistently play very different characters each time.

A Year in Review: KDrama Watching in 2010

I debated for a while on whether I should write up this post. I mean, come on – every other Kdrama blogging site is doing one. Or, the ones I read do. I also admittedly have skimmed through a lot. Yes. Skim.

I have to say that 2010 was a big year for me in terms of dramas. I have never worked so closely with dramas before, and recapping is a pure joy. As I was compiling the list, I realized that I saw more dramas than I ever have in my entire life. Some were not to completion, and some were fleeting. But I included them in the list because I get to explain why I didn’t continue a certain drama. I also realized that I watched a LOT of SBS dramas. I also saw a lot of dramas that were not made or released in 2010, but more like catching up.

So here goes, a review of dramas I saw that came out in 2010 – the good, the meh, and the bad.

News Bits: 9/8/10 Edition

Lee Yoo Ri (Loving You, Daring Women) just got married! She married a missionary studying theology two days ago in a small wedding that included a few celebrities: Lee Soon Jae, Kim Soo Mi, and Hong Soo Young. She met her husband two years ago at a Bible study group. She held a small press conference before her wedding – perhaps to give the press the pics they want without having them inside her wedding. Doesn’t she look like a princess?

News Bits: 9/1/10 Edition

It’s September! New month – new start – and definitely new dramas!

For example, this week, Sungkyunkwan Scandal and Playful Kiss both premiered this week. I am itching to watch the first two episodes – probably this weekend – unless life gets in the way again.

But on to News Bits (which will be short)! Choi Seung Hyun (or T.O.P. – but I will refer to him by his real name when it comes to his acting chops in “Into the Fire”) is rumored to snag the Rookie Award at the 2010 Movie Awards. His performance was so strong that if he does win, he will be the first singer-from-an-idol-group-turned-actor to win one. And boy do I want him to win!

Hey Clint Eastwood! Hire Choi in your next movie!!!

BoA will be releasing her sixth Korean album on August 5th. It will mark her ten-year anniversary since her music debut, and her return to Korea music scene after five years. (She is one away from matching the number of albums she released in Japan, having released 7 Japanese albums.) BoA will also be touring with Kangta, Yunho, Changmin, Super Junior, SNSD, SHINee, f(x), and TRAX on the ‘SMTOWN LIVE ’10 WORLD TOUR’, which starts in Seoul on August 21.

An Interview with the cast of Dong Yi

Dong Yi has been enjoying high ratings (in the 20s range) and will prove to be a tough competitor for the newer dramas Giant and The Nation’s Orders (also known as Call of the Country). It keeps getting compared to Dae Jang Geum, especially since the director Lee Byung Hoon also did that series. But what makes this drama different is the fact that the king Suk Jong and the mistress Jang Hee Bin have been completely reinvented. For example, the king (played by Ji Jin Hee) is now a more charismatic king who engages with the servant ladies and disguises himself to see how the commoners really live. Jang Hee Bin (played by Lee So Yeon) was also re-visualized by making her more of a deeper, thoughtful ‘villain’ than the outright spiteful woman that Mishil from Queen Seon Deok was. That’s also a nice change from her former character in Angel’s Temptation and helps distance her from playing that kind of villain. And Park Ha Sun has been able to show a tougher side to the usually gentle Queen Inhyeon.

The following is an excerpt from the cast interviews. The stars present were Ji Jin Hee, Lee So Yeon, Han Hyo Joo, Bae Soo Bin (as Chun Soo), Park Ha Sun, Jung Jin Young (as Official Seo), Lee Kwang Soo (as Young Dal), and Lee Hee Do (as Hwang Joo Shik).

News Bits: 4/21/10 Edition

Not to be outdone by Park Shin Hye‘s numerous photo spreads, Jang Geun Suk is also modeling for the clothing brand Jack & Jill. In the photos he gives a variety of 8 different expressions. Already with just the hair, I can see his character in You’re My Pet coming to form. In regards to his expressions though… some of them kind of look too similar… and in the last three he looks like he didn’t know what to do with his hands… maybe it’s just the poses that are too similar since he’s in one position the entire time.

News Bits: 3/26/10 Edition

The Baeksang Awards took place today/yesterday in Seoul. Daesang Award went to Go Hyun Joong for her work in Queen Seon Deok, and best drama went to IRIS. For a complete listing and pictures of the stars, go to dramabeans site. It’s awesome that Jang Geun Suk won the popularity award for his role in Itaewon Murder Case (and surprisingly not for You’re Beautiful) – and he was dressed well to boot! Disappointed that Smile You didn’t get acknowledged, but you win some and you lose some? Anyways – weird to give IRIS so many awards…

HK = FOOD. CNN did an awesome article on the best things to eat in Hong Kong – and it really made me salivate. O.M.G. ’nuff said. Just read it – or at least look at the pictures… (that’s what I did – hehe) Ohhhhhh it makes me want to go back to HK so bad!!!!

News Bits: 3/21/10 Edition

Edison Chen is announcing his comeback. (I laff.) After the infamous scandal where compromising photos of him with famous female celebrities were leaked, he escaped Hong Kong a couple of years ago. (If you haven’t heard of this scandal or even made oblique references to him in a joke, you must be living under a rock.) Now he will be working on a new album and hopefully star in a few films. He will also be based mostly in Taiwan. (I laff again.)
