I think I now understand what happens when you’re a fan of a webtoon and you see the people being cast to fit a particular role that you’ve become attached to. And you think, “They’re not going to do well in this role! They can’t portray this character well enough!” To a certain extent I felt it with any casting news for Harry Potter movies, but I trusted the British actors cast and knew they could do justice to J.K. Rowling‘s creations.
Anyways – rumor has it (and it’s probably more concrete than a rumor) that Seo Kang Joon will be cast as the second male lead in Cheese in the Trap, Baek In Ho.
Baek In Ho is a bit of a jerk with an inferiority complex. He and his sister are wards of Yoo Jung’s father, where they grew up with a lot of money and alongside Yoo Jung (Park Hae Jin) because their grandfather was good friends with Mr. Yoo. In Ho was also a pianist prodigy, but an accident – seemingly caused by Yoo Jung – crippled one of his hands and prevented him from ever playing again.
In Ho supposedly has a non-Korean “look,” with many people thinking he’s a foreigner. He’s also supposedly been abroad for a while and returns to Korea to find his sister In Ha still pining over Yoo Jung and trying to find a job without relying on Yoo Jung’s family. He’s a bit of a jerk towards Hong Seol (Kim Go Eun), which I believe stems from his attitude towards Jung to begin with, and he only finds her far more amusing because she doesn’t like him. It’s kind of a funny love-hate relationship. I don’t think that he’s a great second-lead character to vie for Seol’s love, but I’m sure I’ll get to that point in the webtoon…
Even though I don’t really like In Ho as a character, I feel uncomfortable with the idea of Seo Kang Joon as In Ho. He’s not what I thought In Ho would be! And he can’t even compete with Park Hae Jin! I can’t imagine Seo as a jerk at all, and I think it’ll be almost laughable. Kim Woo Bin was a great jerk as Choi Young Do in Heirs, a drama that I think mirrors certain aspects of Cheese in the Trap but done worse, and so I’d like someone similar to Kim Woo Bin in that role. If Joo Ji Hoon could move away from melodramas, that’d be nice to see him in this role too…
I’m pretty sure this will be final casting, but we’ll only know for sure how it’ll work out when the drama airs in December/January 2016. He will join Kim Go Eun, Park Hae Jin, and Nam Joo Hyuk (School 2015), who will play Seol’s best friend Eun Taek.
