China Remakes ‘Architecture 101’, ‘Cyrano Dating Agency’

Two Uhm Tae Woong films are about to be remade in China thanks to the popularity of the original Korean films: Architecture 101 and Cyrano Dating Agency.

The two films were produced by Shim Jae Myung, who owns Myung Films. Together with a Chinese production company, Myung Films will produce the remake versions in China because romantic comedies do so well abroad. I couldn’t agree more – horror and romantic comedies are two genres that I think can easily cross borders and be remade in every country without losing the original heart of the story.

Architecture 101 was one of the top 10 most watched films in Korea when it came out in 2012, setting a new box office record of 4.1 million tickets sold in the first nine weeks it was out. The melodrama starred Uhm Tae Woong and Han Ga In, and centered around the reunion of two college sweethearts 17 years later as she asks him to build her a new house. (Read my review here!) Meanwhile, Cyrano Dating Agency sold about 2.7 million tickets when it came out in 2010, unexpectedly doing far better than anyone else had anticipated. That film, which also starred Uhm along with Park Shin Hye and Lee Min Jung, spawned its own drama version Dating Agency: Cyrano with Sooyoung and Lee Jong Hyuk. It followed a man who was the master matchmaker in creating circumstances for his client to fall in love with their “target.”

What sparked these remakes into production was the highly successful release of 20 Once Again, which is actually the remake of Miss Granny with Shim Eun Kyung. Miss Granny actually came out a year ago (January 22, 2014), and the Chinese version, starring breakout star Yang Zi Shan and Bolin Chen, came out on January 8, 2015. Just one year! And since its release, 20 Once Again has already made 200 million yuan at the box office.

The hope is that Architecture 101 and Cyrano Dating Agency’s Chinese counterparts will be equally successful for all.
