Finally Riding ‘The Return of Superman’ Train

I’m ashamed to say that I only started watching this show recently (thanks to DramaFever having these episodes up now) since it has one of my most favorite things in the world: cute babies! And I mean, seriously cute babies.

One of the main reasons why I like this show is because the little kids remind me so much of my baby cousins, of whom I take much joy in watching grow up. Watching Sarang, Seo Eon and Seo Jun, and Dae Han, Min Gook, and Man Se lets me relive the moments of when my cousins would do or say something adorable. My cousins have yet to reach Haru’s age, so seeing her is like giving me a preview of what may come. I am also constantly impressed at the kids’ command of the language because they can all speak short sentences in varying degrees of difficulty, while I still have a cousin who’s recently only learned how to string two words together and is the same age as the triplets. I wonder if it’s just because Korean is easier to learn and imitate than English

Another reason why I like this show is because we really get to see another side of the dads. For most of them I’m unfamiliar with their work. But it was wonderful to see Jang Hyun Sung be such a considerate and conscientious father when he’s usually a villain in dramas, or Choo Sung Hoon be such a loving father who simply adores his daughter. And Song Il Gook was a surprise because he approaches fatherhood with great gusto. I love it! Tablo on the other hand is so loving… and easily controlled by the women in his life, which is kind of amusing. And finally, I truly appreciate how Lee Hwi Jae is so open about how tiring it is to raise his twins. Every father has his own way of raising his children, and it’s nice to see what works, and what doesn’t work for them.

I don’t know if this show would necessarily work in the States, even though I think it could. There’s just a different perception of men and fatherhood in Korea, and especially of these particular celebrity fathers, which makes the show really enlightening and fun to watch. In the States I think it’s more expected that the husband take care of the household just as much as the wife, and that there are a lot of stay-at-home dads here. At the same time, it would be kind of cool to see someone like George Clooney try to change a diaper. (If he ever has a kid soon.)

So in homage to this wonderful series, I am grabbing a few clips from my favorite scenes with the kids. My favorites are Dae Han, Min Gook, and Man Se. After them, it’s Sarang, and then Seo Eon and Seo Jun.
