Shanghai Adventures: Days 1-4

So the Great Firewall of China and the lack of consistent internet has caused me to delay any posting of my trip in Shanghai. It has also prevented me from getting online at all. The last time I was in this city was five years ago, and it was never this difficult to get online or to visit social media sites. I even had a hard time just letting my family know I was okay via email!

In any case the city has changed in many ways while retaining some of its familiar flavor. I am both comfortable and in awe in this city at the surrounding sites, having last been here five years ago. Things change ridiculously quickly…

(Also, in the picture above, there was a LOT of smog on our first day. It was actually dangerously high, and affected the view of The Bund. Sadly, this is the only picture of the Shanghai skyline I have. Five years ago, the building with the square hole in the middle, Shanghai World Financial Center, was the tallest building ever. Now it’s the Shanghai Tower, that tall spiral that’s still being finished off.)

First up… CRAB MEAT XIAOLONGBAO (soup dumplings). SO VERY FRESH AND CRAB-BY.

NOT SURE WHAT IT’S CALLED BUT A FRIED VERSION OF A XIAOLONGBAO – FLAKY CRUST ON THE OUTSIDE, MEAT FILLING AND SOUP ON THE INSIDE.

SPRING ROLLS WITH CRAB MEAT!

STIR PAN FRIED NOODLES WITH CRAB MEAT!

FANCY COFFEE…

IT’S A MEAT COOKIE…

A DELICIOUS PASTRY OF CHOCOLATE ON TOP, LAYERS OF FLAKY PASTRY AND PEANUT BUTTER.

HOT POT!!!!

BREAKFAST: SOY MILK, MA CHOU (FRIED SESAME BALL), YOU TIAO (FRIED CRUELLER), AND DA BING.

NOODLES WITH BEEF AND TOFU, AND PAN FRIED SOUP DUMPLINGS. SO GOOD. THE MOMENT I BIT INTO THE DUMPLINGS, SOUP SQUIRTED RIGHT OUT TO MY LEFT. AWKWARD.

SWEET TEA/LEMONADE WITH LOTS OF FRUITS. A BETTER FRUIT PUNCH THAN ANYTHING I’VE HAD IN MY LIFE.

HONGSHAONIUROU – BRAISED BEEF, I THINK. BUT MORE THAN JUST BRAISED BEEF. ANYWAYS – AMAZING STUFF. BEST DISH EVER.

ZHAJIANGMIAN – NOODLES WITH MEAT SAUCE. USED TO HAVE THIS WHILE IN SCHOOL BUT IT’S NOT AS GOOD AS I REMEMBERED IT ANYMORE… 😦

NANXIANG XIAOLONGBAO – REALLY FAMOUS, TOURISTY XIAOLONGBAO. NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST CRAB MEAT XIAOLONGBAO WE HAD.

BBQ SKEWERS FOR DINNER! PLUS AN EGGPLANT DISH THAT WAS AMAZING – GRILLED AND MIXED WITH OTHER SPICY GOODNESS, I DON’T KNOW HOW TO DESCRIBE IT. IT’S JUST GOOD.

AND TOPPED OFF WITH SOME AYI NAICHA – MILK TEA WITH GLUTINOUS RICE. IT’S REALLY GOOD. NEVER THOUGHT OF HAVING MILK TEA WITH RICE!

And there goes the condensed version of my trip! Drinks and good times were to be had, and I experienced a very condensed version of Shanghai night life (speakeasies, karaoke, and then clubbing). All in all it was a good trip to revisit old memories fo the city.
